TWO RULES:
1. TAKE CARE OF YOUR CUSTOMER’S
2. SOLVE THE PROBLEMS THAT MAKE RULE 1. DIFFICULT!
They almost always say, OK so how do we do that? I always answer with the 10 Commandments of Success. I first heard these back in the early 80’s during a visit to Japan, and they still work today.
The 10 Commandments of Success
I. WASTES, VARIATION AND INFLEXABILITY HIDE SO START BY DISCLOSING ALL OF YOUR MISTAKES AND PROBLEMS (ALWAYS FOCUS ON THE PROCESS)
II. DISCOVER THE TRUTH BEYOND YOUR UNDERSTANDING
(5 WHY’S & PDCA THINKING)
III. INCREASING PRODUCTION WHILE LIMITING THE NUMBER OF WORKERS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GAIN TRUE SUCCESS (MANAGE YOUR PROCESS AND YOUR PEOPLE)
IV. ACT ON PROBLEMS RIGHT AWAY, DON’T PROCRASTINATE
(FIX IT NOW…REMEMBER THE RULE OF 10’s)
V. DON’T FEEL SATISFIED BY SAYING, “I FINISHED THE JOB” GO BEYOND THAT AND SAY, “I CAN DO MORE, I CAN DO BETTER, I CAN ADD MORE VALUE”
VI. ADD “APPROPRIATE TIMING” TO “APPROPRIATE METHOD” IN PROBLEM-SOLVING (WORK TO ROOT CAUSE, IF YOU CAN”T MAKE THE PROBLEM COME AND GO AT WILL, YOU HAVE NOT GOTTEN TO ROOT CAUSE!)
VII. BELIEVE IN “I CAN” AND QUESTION “I CAN’T” (AS A TEAM WE CAN SOLVE ANY PROBLEM, IF WE KNOW ABOUT IT)
VIII. THE KEY TO ACHIEVING PROGRESS IS TO NEVER GIVE UP (NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP)
IX. DON’T DO WORK AT AN AVERAGE PACE; THE SHORTEST WAY IS ALWAYS THE EASIEST (HAVE A SINCE OF URGENCY FOR OUR CUSTOMERS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE)
X. CHANGE YOURSELF FIRST IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE SOME ONE ELSE
