Leadership Development:

Overcoming The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

It is a fact; Effective Teamwork produces the one sustainable competitive advantage that has been largely untapped. With so much emphasis, books and articles written and experts talking about team work, it should not be as rare as it is in today’s organizations. But the reality is that most management teams aren’t teams! Most of the organizations where we live and work are marked by underperforming, often very dysfunctional teams. Why?
First, the term teamwork has been overused and has lost much of its meaning, like many other buzz words in the corporate world. To be successfully implemented, teamwork must be a strategic choice, a purposeful decision that the organization makes.
Second, you can’t simply mandate teamwork, it has to be developed. The fact is, teamwork is not simple, most of us really don’t know what is required. In practice, teamwork is difficult because human beings are fallible creatures, when you put enough of us in a room and ask us to work together, problems arise. In order to function as an empowered team, members must make a cultural shift from the personal perspective of “me first” to a perspective of “team first” while still holding on to individuality.

For teams willing to make the investment, to do what is required, the rewards are great. Empowered teams make higher quality decisions and accomplish much more in less time, with less distraction and frustration. They don’t waste time talking about the wrong issues and revisiting the same topics over and over again. empowered teams always outperform the dysfunctional ones!
Based on the bestselling book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni, and supplemented with materials developed from real-world experiences, Empowered Performance, LLC has designed a three module workshop for business leadership teams.
The two day sessions are tailored to the needs of your team based on personal interviews, the team assessment, each team member’s individual DISC behavior profiles, and the objectives of the business.
The engagement starts with one-on-one interviews with each member of the team in order to develop relationships. The interviews, along with the team assessment and the DISC behavior profiles, allow for the selection of supplemental materials and articles, experiencial exercises and videos. This customization provides the framework for the group to move from dysfunctional, through functional to a fully empowered team capable of moving the organization to the next level and beyond.
Module One focuses on understanding the current team assessment, behavior profiles and establishing trust. Module Two focuses on specific skills and techniques for constructive conflict, rules of engagement, and personal commitment. Finally, Module Three provides processes for team accountability, working with interpersonal dynamics and maintaining focus on results.
Each session has numerous team exercises, videos and reading assignments. Between sessions the team is given homework assignments to reinforce the skills and techniques already covered as well as to address any specific needs that arise as a result of the sessions. Empowered Performance LLC leads, teaches the skills, and monitors the effort throughout the engagement and provides guidance and coaching to the leader as well as the team members.
